Radon Testing and Mitigation

Radon Mitigation System

PROVIDING PEACE OF MIND AND PROTECTION FROM RADON

Chances are pretty good that you've heard about radon before. Chances are also pretty good that you aren't completely familiar with the causes, risks or reasons to have your home tested for radon. It is also likely that you may have discussed the topic of radon with people who claim the testing and reporting of radon gas in homes is a scam or scare tactic to convince homeowners/sellers to purchase unnecessary mitigation systems. The reality is that radon is a radioactive, cancer-causing gas and is undetectable without the use of special equipment due to its invisible, odorless and tasteless properties. Experts estimate that excessive levels of radon exist in 1 of every 15 homes and the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Changes in the real estate and home inspection industry is leading to more homes being tested for radon during the inspection process of a home sale, but many others remain a question.

Ashland Comfort Control is a licensed Radon Mitigation Contractor (RC277) in the State of Ohio and is certified by the Ohio Department of Health to test and mitigate the presence of radon gas in residential and commercial properties. We use Sun Nuclear 1030 RadonSentinal Continuous Radon Monitors (CRM) and follow all EPA and State protocols.

FAQ:

Q: What is radon?

A: Radon is a gas, caused by the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water. Radon gas can enter your home through any surfaces in contact with the soil and mixes with the air your breathe.

Q: What is the risk of having radon gas in my home?

A: Radon gas contains radioactive particles, that when inhaled can damage lung tissue and lead to lung cancer over the course of your lifetime. Smokers are at a highest risk and it is estimated that radon gas causes thousands of deaths each year.

Q: How do I know if I have a radon problem?

A: Similar to second-hand smoke, inhaling any amount of radon gas is undesirable, however it exists everywhere (even outdoors) and minimal exposure is unavoidable. The EPA has established a threshold of 4.0 pCi/L which is the level than can be reasonably achieved using one of their prescribed mitigation techniques.

Q: How much does testing and mitigating for radon cost?

A: A single radon test costs $99, takes a minimum of 48 hours to complete and comes with a multi-page color report with pictures and a graph of hourly tested levels. Should it be determined that mitigation is recommended (i.e. EPA Average >4.0 pCi/L) a typical mitigation system installation costs between $1,000-$2,500 depending on a number of factors (size/stories of home, sump pump, sub-slab material, fan location, etc.). Each mitigation system comes with free a post mitigation test to confirm the radon levels in the home have been reduced beneath the 4.0 pCi/L threshold.
